Wrestler of the Week: Jonny Parada

Jonny!! Jonny!! Jonny!! Was heard rumbling through the Rabobank Arena this past weekend in the finals of the 126 pound weight class in the state of California. An unknown wrestler by many in the arena was in total control of his state finals match. With quick cat like reflexes, Jonny hit a nice ankle pick that took his opponent (Wyatt Wyckoff) straight to his back to give Jonny a 13-6 advantage and the win. With this win, Jonny became the first wrestler in his high school and section to ever have a California state champion. “He obviously found film on me and knew how to defend everything I had. He was keeping his distance and he forced me to mess up,” said Wyckoff, who also will take home a black eye and cut lip from the tournament. “He’s fast, he’s strong. He outwrestled us,” Paradise coach Dan Nelson said. Congratulations to Jonny Parada for being the CalGrappler wrestler of the week.

Clovis HS – 2013 Team State Champions

Team of the Week: Clovis

With two State Champions in Nick Nevills (285) and Adrian Salas (182), the Cougars, led by Coach Steve Tirapelle, won their third straight CIF California state championship. They also won their 11^th overall state tittle, most by any school in California.  All 12 of Clovis’ state qualifiers won at least one match with bonus points. Cougar wrestlers were 42-19 overall, getting bonus points in 27 matches, including 19 falls. Other Cougars who medaled at state were, Khristian Olivas (113), Jonas Gaytan (126) and Jason ladd (145). Next season the Cougars return eight wrestlers from this current line up and will try to win their fourth straight CIF state tittle and 12^th overall. Behind six finalist and three champions in Morgan Sauseda (106 Pounds), Cordero Rios (160 Pounds) and Sam Miller (182 Pounds) Chico High won the Northern Section Master tournament.  Even before the finals started Saturday night at the Northern Section Masters Wrestling Championships, it was already a foregone conclusion that Chico High would take home the team title. Head coach Keith Rollins’ Panthers put six wrestlers in the finals for the championships, and with a 32-point lead over second-place Sutter, all Chico had to do was compete and the Panthers ended up with 12 of their 14 wrestlers at the tournament placing in the top six. Chico High ended up winning their third championship in five years, snapping Orland’s two-year reign with 219.5 points. The top-seeded Sauseda got things rolling for the Panthers in the first final of the night, getting a 2-point reversal early in the second round on Orland junior Hugo Punzo, the No. 2 seed. Sauseda gave up a penalty point for stalling with 15 seconds left in the match, and hung on for a 2-1 victory and his second straight berth in the CIF state championships, set for next weekend in Bakersfield. He improved his season record to 35-7. Rios, also a No. 1 seed and returning state qualifier, used a pair of takedowns and some stout defense to beat Durham junior Jake Wiley 5-0 for his title. Rios is now 33-8 this year. Miller took his No. 1 seed against No. 3 seed Dylan Hill, a senior from Orland. He nailed a double-leg takedown with :35 seconds left to secure a 6-3 decision. Anthony Valencia – St. John Bosco HS

Individual: Anthony Valencia

Anthony Valencia is a great student of the sport and ambassador of why cutting weight doesn’t necessarily guarantee you success. Last season he was one of the best incoming freshman in the state as well as the nation. As a 126 pounder last season, he won the state title with a pin in the finals. This season, up three weight classes, he won the Southern Section Masters meet with a 10-3 victory over national ranked opponent and number 1 wrestler in the state, Christian Pagdilao from Santiago-Corona High. “I’m a little more confident at 145 pounds (since moving up) because these guys are stronger, but I started lifting hard and I’m stronger and excited to reach the finish line next week in state,” Valencia said.  This weekend he will face Anthony Caito from Gregori High in the first round at the state meet. Panorama HS

Team: Panorama HS Girls

It was an historical event of its kind. The LA City Section held its first ever Girls wrestling tournament at Panorama High, the host Pythons made sure to set the standard high. Panorama had five individual champions and benefited from a late victory by Bell High wrestler Melina Aguilar to edge San Fernando 146-145 to capture the team title. The Tigers trailed 146-139 with two matches remaining when the Tigers’ Yakira Andrade was pinned by Aguilar in the 138-pound final to mathematically eliminate San Fernando from title contention. Winning titles for Panorama High were Coellet Rangel (98), Kaylee Acuna (103), Jasmine Heraldez (122), Melissa Martinez (126) and Micah Nacpil (235). Next up for them, it’s the Girls State Championships on February 22-23 at Lemoore high school. Congratulations to Panorama High for being this week CalGrappler team of the week.

Jonas Gaytan – Clovis HS

Individual: Jonas Gaytan, Clovis High

Considered the toughest league in California, the TRAC wrestling league always produces many state qualifiers and medal winners every year. In the rich history of the Clovis High wrestling team, there has never been a 4-time TRAC champion until yesterday. Jonas Gaytan at 120 pounds, made history by winning his fourth title. In the finals he defeated fellow California State Qualifier Jason De la Cruz from Buchanan High 5-0. Gaytan’s previous titles came at 113, 112 and 103 pounds.
