SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The 2017-18 Cal Poly wrestling schedule, released Tuesday by head coach Jon Sioredas and director of athletics Don Oberhelman, includes just three home matches, but four other events in the state of California.

And the Mustangs will be competing in a pair of prestigious tournaments as well.

Cal Poly’s home matches will be against Northwestern on Dec. 15 and Pac-12 Conference duals against Stanford on Jan. 26 and Arizona State on Feb. 11.

“We have a heavy road schedule this year, but we will be in the state of California for seven events,” said Sioredas as he prepares for his second season at the helm of the Mustangs.

The match against Stanford highlights Cal Poly’s Alumni and Supporter Weekend, which also includes the Second Annual Crab Feed Benefit on Jan. 27, the day following the dual meet.

“We will also attend two prominent tournaments, the Las Vegas Invitational and the Midlands, to help prepare us for the NCAA tournament,” Sioredas added.

Both tournaments attract about 30 teams, including many of the nation’s top-25 wrestling programs. The Las Vegas Invitational will be held Dec. 1-2 at the Las Vegas Convention Center’s South Halls while the Midlands is hosted by Northwestern on Dec. 29-30 at Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

Cal Poly opens its 2017-18 season at the Roadrunner Open inside CSU Bakersfield’s Icardo Center on Nov. 19. The Mustangs also will compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 17 and the Western National Open in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Feb. 18.

In addition to the three home duals and the Roadrunner Open, Cal Poly also will wrestle in California at Fresno State on Jan. 4, against Penn at Stanford on Jan. 7 and at CSU Bakersfield on Jan. 31.

Other dual meets on the road include Northern Colorado on Jan. 19, Air Force on Jan. 21 and Oregon State on Feb. 4.

Fresno State has reinstated its wrestling program after a nearly 12-year hiatus while Boise State dropped wrestling in April.

Oregon State will host the Pac-12 Championship on Feb. 25, with the NCAA Division I National Championship slated for March 15-17 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
