WRESTLING PREP INC (501 3c) is pleased to announce the addition of Joe Williamson in the capacities of Board Member,  Partner and Coach.

Joe Williamson comes to Wrestling Prep after five years of service at FLO Wrestling (www.flowrestling.org) where he developed and grew a community of wrestlers and fans through innovative and interactive multi media coverage. He has observed the highest levels of wrestlers and coaches in the top environments around the world. A partial list of events Mr. Williamson has covered includes but is not limited to 3 World Championships, the 2012 Olympics, 6 Russian National Championships, 5 US Opens, 6 World and Olympic Team Trials, 6 NCAA Championships and many of the top National High School Tournaments.

“We were ecstatic when Joe asked about the possibility of him associating with Wrestling Prep on a permanent collaborative basis. We can’t imagine someone more  equipped to effect student athletes and the mission of Wrestling Prep. From the beginning, Wrestling Prep has been unique in many facets and Joe has embraced and perpetuated everyone one of them.” said Wrestling Prep Head Coach Carolyn Wester.

2X Olympian and Undefeated UFC Fighter Daniel Cormier shared ”This is a great thing for Carolyn Wester and Wrestling Prep. Joe was on the front line at FLO Wrestling and gave wrestlers and coaches a view into the World of Wrestling as we had never seen before. His experience at the Olympic Games, World Championships, Russian Nationals and many other high level wrestling events will be very valuable for kids at the grassroots level in California. This is a great hire for northern California in general. I look forward to working with Joe and Wrestling Prep as we try to develop wrestling in the Bay Area”.

Wrestling Prep Board Member Jason Welch said “I’m so exited that Joe Williamson is joining the Wrestling Prep team. At Wrestling Prep we are working on developing the entire individual through wrestling and academics; and Joe is someone who genuinely cares for the kids and who fits into who our mission statement. He brings to the table not only his credentials from FLO Wrestling with his media and wrestling knowledge, but also years of experience teaching and being involved in the education system. I can’t wait to work alongside him”.

Rob Valero, Head of California USA Wrestling said upon hearing the news, “Having Joe Williamson in California is tremendous pick up for not only California but Wrestling. What a huge asset he is and will be to our sport”.

According to long time Wrestling Prep Athlete PJ Klee, “Joe will be a great addition to Wrestling Prep. I can’t think of anyone better to help build our styles. He has been able to travel the world and see some of the best wrestling out there, as well as conduct interviews and technique sessions with the best collegiate wrestling in the United States. I don’t think there is anything he doesn’t know. His knowledge of the sport is something any wrestler should want. I am excited to have Joe out on the West Coast, and a part of Wrestling Prep”.

USA Wrestling’s 2013 Greco Coach of the Year Bill Mitchell said ”I believe that Joe Williamson is not only the face of FLO Wrestling but is also the face of wrestling in America. Joe coming to Wrestling Prep will bring to light the organizations true mission thru media and increase exposure on the World Circuits. Wrestling Prep and Joe will be a great marriage for the wrestling community and the quality of West Coast wrestling”. ”As a fellow Missouri coach and athlete I have known Joe for many years as a colleague and friend. He has helped grow wrestling on the state, national and international stage”.

Wrestling Prep is an association of like-minded individuals based out of San Jose, CA who are committed to the growth of the community through wrestling and academic support. Wrestling Prep currently operates out of a 10,000 square foot facility in San Jose, CA with that holds six regulation mats and 2000 square feet dedicated to Academic Training. Over 170 Wrestling Prep associates are currently in college wrestling. Wrestling Prep just completed its 2013 Summer Ten Week Residential Training Program where over 1350 individual wrestlers participated.

Gerry Abas talks about his start in wrestling in the Bay Area and how his speed, quickness and flash on the wrestling mat had its foundations in break dancing in the 1980s.

He also talks about his classic match and loss to Iowa’s Lincoln McIlravy, coaching his younger brother Stephen at Fresno State, watching the school drop the program and his feelings about it at the time. Abas also speaks about his son Jaden and what we can expect from him on the next level.

Stephen Abas named head coach at Fresno High School

Stephen Abas

Stephen Abas, 2008 Olympic silver medalist and three-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion at Fresno State, has been named head wrestling coach at Fresno High School.

“We are excited to welcome Coach Abas to Fresno Unified, knowing that he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with our Fresno High student-athletes,” said Fresno Unified Superintendent Bob Nelson.
The statement said Abas would take the helm of the Warriors wrestling program at Fresno High immediately.

As a wrestler at Fresno State University, Abas was a four-time NCAA All-American, winning three NCAA titles at 125 pounds in 1999, 2001, and 2002. Abas tallied a 144-4 overall record for the Bulldogs, including 46 pins. Abas’ career winning percentage of 97.3 percent is also a school record. For all these accomplishments, Abas was named the Fresno State Male Athlete of the Year in 1999 and 2001.

Stephen in high school (Canyon Springs HS & James Logan HS) was a 3X CIF state champion and a NHSCA National Champion in 1996.
