Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson has made a habit of recruiting wrestlers ranked No. 1 in their weight class, and he did it again this week by securing a verbal commitment from top-ranked heavyweight Nick Nevills of Clovis, Calif.

Flowrestling.org reported the commitment of Nevills, who has won two California state titles for one of the top scholastic programs in the country. He was 53-0 as a junior, with 44 of those wins coming by fall.

He’ll enter Penn State during the 2014-15 season as will Solanco High School senior Thomas Haines, a three-time PIAA champion who also will be a heavyweight.

Nevills, who has a career record of 150-5, is listed as the fourth-ranked wrestler in the country while Haines checks in at No. 5.

Flowrestling cited Ohio State, Stanford, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State as other schools on Nevills’ list of potential selections.

Nevills told Flowrestling editor Willie Saylor that “State College has an awesome feeling in the air. Just walking around the campus and town you get the feeling that wrestling is a big deal to everyone there. It’s the place that I am ready to make my new home and win big matches and win individual and team championships.’’

Recruiting is an ongoing process, and the next No. 1-ranked wrestler Penn State fans will be waiting to hear from is Chance Marsteller of Kennard-Dale in York County.

Marsteller, also a three-time PIAA champ and unbeaten in his high school career, is the top-ranked overall wrestler in this year’s nationwide senior class.

Marsteller said during the PIAA tournament that he’ll make a college decision some time this fall.
