Placentia. California –
With the strength of 11 state champions and 14 state placers, Team California All-Stars won the Americas Cup for the fourth consecutive time. In the course of three days, California All-Stars went 8-0, averaging more than 35 points against teams they wrestled. The only team to win more than two matches against California All-Stars was team Diesel out of Bakersfield, California. This happened in the Gold Pool semifinal match, were Sophomore Matt Gamble (Monache High) and Junior Emilio Saavedra (Modesto High), beat California state champions Adrian Camposano (Central High) and Nikko Villareal (Gilroy High). “I was satisfied with winning the match even though it really meant nothing to me. I was happy to see that my self-dedication, hard-work, and discipline is paying off this summer. The win proved to myself more than anything that I am steadily improving, and that I am a major force to be reckoned with not only in the state of California but in the country as well. Now it’s back to the wrestling room and try to win a state title next season with my brother. We are very close and do everything together, so that would be a great way to end my high school career”-Emilio Saavedra.
In the Championship match versus team Michigan, California All-Stars won the dual with a 44-12 score. Michigan won two matches via pin at 118 and 131 pounds. The feature match of this dual was at 165 pounds were the number #3 wrestler in the nation Isaiah Martinez (Lemoore High) met Two-time Michigan state champion Jordan Cooks (Davidson High). It was a closed match from the beginning with both gladiators shooting and trying to get deep on their opponent. Going into the third period Martinez shot a double for the takedown and the win. Martinez went 8-0 in the three days with his only close match being against Cooks.
